Opening the world
A teacher opens an Idby book, and the children meet someone new. It might be Bella, who loves bikes, or Sammy, who loves sliding. Everyone in Idby has something they love. And that’s where the stories begin.
Meet Bella
Let’s start with Bella. In her first story, we find out why she loves bikes so much. She imagines riding faster than cars, faster than birds, even faster than her own words. The English is simple enough to begin with, but there’s plenty for a child to imagine.
Join in
The teacher reads with the children. They look at the pictures, join in with words and talk about what they notice. There are things to remember, sounds to try and questions with more than one possible answer. There’s a song to sing together, too.
Return to the character
Then they meet Bella again. This time, she has so many bikes that her friends can’t get into her house. She can’t even find the fridge. Her brilliant idea leads to bikes made for the little Ids. The children already know what Bella loves. Now they see what she can do with it.
Make something of their own
And the children have ideas of their own. They can draw a bike and give it a name, talk about Bella’s invention, or notice the sounds at the beginning of words. They can sing, move, draw and speak. English becomes part of something they’re doing together.
The world gets bigger
Bella is one of twelve characters, with two books for each. There are four seasonal Big Books for sharing longer stories, too, along with songs, workbooks and an Alphabet and Sounds book. The children keep meeting familiar friends as they find more things to hear, say and explore.
The teacher’s part
The teacher has ideas and materials to work from, with room to follow the children’s questions and interests. A story can lead into a song, a conversation or something to make. The books and resources provide the starting point. The teacher brings them to life with the class.
